Both the Village and the nearby Cass River are named after General Lewis Cass, who served as Michigan’s territorial governor in the early 1800s and was the Democratic nominee for U.S. President in 1848.
The area’s development began with the establishment of a sawmill along the Cass River in 1851, followed by the arrival of farming settlers in 1855. Cass City officially became an incorporated village in 1883. Agriculture has long been a cornerstone of the local economy, complemented by light industry and a variety of small businesses.
Residents of Cass City take great pride in the community’s quality of life. The Village features a 9-hole golf course and an expansive 80+ acre recreational park that includes multiple playgrounds, the Helen Stevens Memorial Pool and Splash Pad, five baseball fields, four softball diamonds, a football field and track, an 18-hole disc golf course, the newly added Cass City Bark Park, two pavilions, and scenic wooded nature areas.
